No Child Left Behind has driven a bonanza of off-the-shelf assessments which, though they vary from state to state, are all equally simplistic and worship at the same altar of the multiple choice question.

    In 2014, all 50 states will steer their vessels to Lake Wobegon to celebrate their students’ universal proficiency in reading and math. The absurdity of universal proficiency aside, the celebration will be tempered by a simple and unavoidable reality: Each state has its own definition of proficiency based on its own set of standards—and those definitions vary widely.

    With the encouragement from NASSP and NAESP, along with several other major leadership organizations, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards has embarked on a process to define and validate standards for accomplished, effective principals. This initiative will help motivate principals, strengthen the prestige of the profession, and raise awareness of the critical role of principals in ensuring successful outcomes for students.
