Vicki Petzko, a former middle level principal turned professor, recently sat down with NASSP to share her thoughts on the leadership skills most critical to success at the middle level and what it takes for leaders with a background in elementary or high school to make the successful transition to the middle level.

Petzko has been a professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga since 1998. During that time she has revised the School Leadership program twice, in alignment with both Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) standards and most recently new state standards. She has presented at the NASSP Annual Convention numerous times, served on NASSP’s ‘Principal Preparation Task Force’ from 2002 to 2004, and was a member of the s national research team in middle level leadership from 1999 to 2004. Prior to that she was a middle school principal and a high school assistant principal in the Minneapolis, MN, metropolitan area.
